Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
