NL Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
by Colby on March 3rd, 2024
Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor in the world by quite a few of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to learn every little thing he could about poker. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the adverse feedback from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the best poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and a continuing love for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes blunders in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Even though Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
