Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi-low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
