Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi low begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at first, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing array of wagering options and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
