Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The actual improvement in his skills began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
