Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the adverse feedback from other people kill his ambition of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.

He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and winning was not a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he defeated a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is very abashed about his success. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and always strives to get better.

Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a normal basis.
