Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The definite advancement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
