In hold’em, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a specific total of cash. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used phrase for this play. In the next step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and deals two cards face down to all players. A normal deck of 52 cards is used in the deal. After the deal, there is the first round of wagering. This sequence is often known as a "pre-flop".

Following the first betting sequence, the first card is discarded. This discarded card is the "burn card", and this is done to make sure that there is no dishonestly. The following three cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now comes a second sequence of betting, after which the dealer tosses out an additional card and flips 1 more card onto the poker table. Following this, participants can employ the sixth card to form a five-card poker hand.

Another sequence of wagering follows, and in a number of styles of games, here is where the wager amount doubles. There is another round of burning a card, and a final placing of a card face-up on the poker table. This is referred to as the "river".
